The 10 reasons bad design happens

In 2002, Scott Berkun analyzed and described ten factors that lead to the creation of poor UX and design. In just over 20 years, he has rethought, refined and published his list again.

These factors include general incompetence, a shift in focus from functionality to quality, a tendency to confirmation, and other reasons.

If I Were a Junior Product Designer Again

Arkadiusz Radek shared five relevant tips for beginners in product design that will help accelerate their career growth. They are quite basic, but nevertheless valuable.

Recommendations:

  • Make a clear career plan and discuss it with the management. Determine what skills you need, where you can get them, and whether you will be able to grow in your current job.

  • Learn the basics of UX design and the psychology of human behavior. This will help protect your design decisions.

  • Be open to receiving feedback and use it for professional growth. Don't mix personal self-esteem and work

  • Choose a job so that you can find a mentor there. If there is no such job, look for a mentor on the side.

  • Develop business skills to better understand the company's strategic goals and competently justify the value of your work.

New technologies

  • Twitter founder Jack Dorsey introduced Goose, an open—source AI agent that automates routine development. He runs tests on his own, writes scripts, edits files, and creates projects from scratch. It works locally based on most popular LLMs. It can connect to GitHub, Google Drive, JetBrains IDE, MCP servers and API

  • Mistral has released the Mistral Small 3, a new open—source model that is comparable in benchmarks to Llama 3.3 and Qwen 2.5 32B. They also updated the interface and functions of their Le Chat chat.

  • OpenAI has released o3-mini and o3-mini-high, new models optimized for web search and data analysis. Both models are available with a Plus subscription and a limit of 150 messages per day. The o3-mini is available on a free tariff, but the limits vary. APU prices have become 63% cheaper compared to the o1-mini, but still more expensive than the DeepSeek-R1

OpenAI has released Deep Research, a new tool for conducting deep research on the Internet.

Details:

  1. Independently finds, analyzes and synthesizes information from a huge variety of online sources, after which he writes an analytical report.

  2. It takes an average of 5-30 minutes to create a report.

  3. The number of distortions and inaccuracies is minimal. In the Humanity's Last Exam test, it shows 26.6% accuracy, which is a record for OpenAI models.

  4. Built on the basis of the new o3 model

  5. Available for ChatGPT Pro users. The limit is 100 requests per month.

  6. In the future, access is possible on the Plus and Team plans.
