The path to design principal: Mastering archetypes and defining success

Val Head from Adobe spoke about six professional archetypes of a designer that need to be strengthened in order to advance to the position of design director. They represent development vectors that are important for competent team management and achieving business goals.

Val briefly reviewed the features and benefits of each vector, and also showed graphs of surveys of Adobe design directors where they evaluated their combination of archetypes.

Six archetypes:

  • Visionary β€” predicts industry development trends and determines positioning

  • Evangelist β€” responsible for promoting ideas both inside and outside the company. His task is to get support and resources for further work.

  • Researcher β€” forms and substantiates hypotheses

  • Innovator β€” identifies gaps in the market and offers new, unique solutions

  • Strategist β€” responsible for strategic thinking and the effectiveness of product launches

  • Expert β€” hones his knowledge in one specific area, in which he becomes an authority

The invisible hand of brand in the gaming world

Koto Studio has released a large, detailed guide on how good branding affects the success of games and why some games become iconic while others are quickly forgotten.

The authors explained why a brand is not just a wrapper, but a very important part of the player's experience, which not only helps build the game universe, but also affects monetization, audience retention, fan base formation and the cultural significance of the project.

As an example, they looked at strong brands (from Minecraft to GTA) and analyzed the key solutions that made them recognizable and successful.
