🗞 News and articles

What is a color space?

A large technical article on digital color display — from the perception of light by the eye to the arrangement of color spaces, gamma settings and color management on devices. With the help of visual illustrations, the authors show why color in the digital space is always a compromise between mathematics, biology and technical limitations.

The article was released as part of the Making Software project.

The Management Skill Nobody Talks About

Mateus Lima compared management to parenting. According to him, in both cases it is not so important to avoid your own mistakes as to be able to restore trust after them. There will be mistakes in any case, but it is the ability to "repair" relationships that makes a leader stronger and creates a culture of trust in the team.

How to restore relations with the team:

  • Tell me exactly what you did wrong, and don't dismiss it with generalities. For example, not "mistakes were made," but "I set incorrect deadlines."

  • Don't get hung up on personal feelings, stress, and other factors. Instead, think about the people who were influenced by your decisions.

  • Change your behavior in practice, not in words.

  • Don't expect an immediate reaction. Give the team time to feel your changes and actions.

The art of learning: Broadening your design foundations

The Readymag design team talked about how self-education and the development of horizons beyond design can give a competitive advantage, change thinking and help make more accurate decisions.

They analyzed the benefits of various fields — from mathematics, history and philosophy to films and inspiration from the outside world. The guys also shared a small list of books, websites, and magazines for self-education.

Main thoughts:

  • Education does not end with formal education. It continues continuously in each project through familiarity with people, culture, or design application contexts.

  • It's important to be curious in order to learn new things. In the future, it will help to create works that will resonate with the audience at different levels.

  • Mathematics, philosophy, and history train abstract thinking and consistency. This will help you see the cause-and-effect relationships in the design.

  • It is important to evaluate why and for whom the design is being developed. The richer your understanding of people and the world, the more effective your communication with them will be.

  • Philosophy helps to think critically, and sociology helps to understand people's problems and needs.

  • Knowledge of history and culture expands the personal archive of references and explains how context influences visual decisions.

  • Working with text is a full-fledged design skill. It is important to be able to structure and communicate thoughts.

  • Additional technical skills increase creative flexibility. For example, 3D modeling, programming, or photography skills.

  • It is important to treat the selection of resources and daily exercises for education as part of a profession, not as a recreation.

0º or 90º: A Technique to Improve Your Vectors

Jake Reinis talked about a technique that makes it easier to draw vector fonts or illustrations using Bezier curves.

Its essence is that the Bezier guides should be only at right angles, and the points should be at the maximum distance from each other and there should be as few of them as possible.
