🗞 News and articles

The Rhythm of Your Screen

Christopher Butler talked about managing the user's attention when studying a site page.

He pointed out that when users get acquainted with the page, they quickly scan the contents of the screen, asking questions about what kind of information it is, how interesting it is to them and what to do next. In this situation, a competent information architecture can convince them to pay more attention to the page, and not just scroll through it.

The main thoughts from the article:

  • Users scan the information on the page while scrolling. Therefore, the elements of the page, which were conceived by the designer as static, will be in motion

  • When designing a page, it is not important whether users will scroll it, but how fast they will do it

  • People are used to emotional and enticing home screens on websites, so they immediately scroll down the page to get to the point

  • If you align the key information only on the left side, it will be easier for the user to process it with a cursory scan

  • Visual hierarchy helps the user to understand a large and complex structure, and empty spaces help to mentally group information when reading

  • The higher the information density of the page, the more difficult it is to understand

It’s 2023 and I’m still frequently asked by clients about scrolling. I understand why. Every design comes with assumptions about how much content

Slow design

Family Studio has published a manifesto of "slow design", in which it calls for a balance between traditional design principles and the use of modern technologies.

Theses of the manifesto:

  • Creativity, art and design are a unique expression of human experience based on history and culture. Therefore, they must be created by man himself

  • Quality is more important than quantity. Instead of constantly chasing the latest tools and technologies, it is important to focus on maximizing the development of existing ones

  • The benefit of designing is not only to create a new product, but also to improve your skills, as well as to get satisfaction from creating something with your own hands

  • Creativity and consumption must be conscious, so the design must take into account the impact of the product on the environment and society

  • Traditional design methods have the same value as modern ones, so it is not necessary to abandon the wisdom and experience of past generations

  • Good design takes time. By slowing down, we can create more meaningful, effective and durable projects

  • A good design combines beauty and functionality, resulting in an item that is both pleasing to the eye and practical to use

  • Design should not be an isolated activity. It should promote cooperation and mutual learning to reflect diverse views and experiences

Dynamic Interfaces

David Hoang spoke about the concept of dynamic interfaces of the future, which will be trained in real time and adapted to the needs of each individual user thanks to AI technologies.

According to his forecast, when designing such dynamic AI interfaces, it will be necessary to pay attention not only to the design of individual screens, but also to what scenarios the interface will be able to develop independently when used.

He also explained why such interfaces are necessary, what is the advantage of continuous personalization over classical A/B testing, and why new applications should not depend on the form factors of individual devices.

Design Patterns Are A Better Way To Collaborate On Your Design System

Ben Clemens spoke about creating design templates for design systems that will not only help coordinate the work of designers and developers, but also allow them to work in parallel with each other. He says that it is not individual visual elements that are important in a design system, but rather templates that can be reused and adapted for different tasks, and which should be built taking into account the unique features of your product. For example, these can be profile templates, tables or grids with content.

In the article, Ben also provides a clear example of how such templates can be developed at the initial design stage. He suggests describing the structure of the future template and the key attributes of its components in the form of a text document that all team members will rely on. Such a document will allow designers and developers to start working at the same time, as well as simplify the implementation of the design after it is ready.

Design Patterns Are A Better Way To Collaborate On Your Design System — Smashing Magazine

Every company and team has to have deep collaboration between engineering and design to get the value out of a design system (and not go nuts). Building design patterns first unblock people to work in parallel, keeps people synced up, and results in reusable modules that speed up your next project.
